Flexible and adaptive production processes require smart automation solutions
Adaptive Manufacturing relies on the development of innovative technologies and intelligent solutions to empower factories in terms of flexibility and efficiency, according to the fast evolving dynamics of the market.
Enabling systems and machines to become adaptive poses several challenges. Such as automatically adjusting the production rate of each individual machine based on production requirements; arranging the production settings in specific sets of tasks (recipes). And again - automatically adapting the production settings according to the environmental conditions and the processing characteristics of raw materials. All of this without prejudice to the objective of constantly keeping high quality standards and reducing waste/costs.
Smitec automation solutions easily fit into this scenario on different levels. First of all in terms of connectivity and interconnection, allowing to process commands (start, stop, recipe change, batch data to be produced) and provide a large set of data relating to their operation. Machines are enabled to communicate both with each other and with a supervision system in order to automatically adapt their production speed according to the recipe being processed, the operating status of the line and the product flow. Read on for more examples of Smitec solutions for adaptive manufacturing.

For main functions of the process feedback control algorithms (typically PID or PI) allow to automatically adapt the operation to the variation of mechanical boundary conditions; in some cases, self-adaptation actions of the setpoints are triggered by environmental conditions. Machines featuring Smitec automation are highly parameterized, featuring multiple sets of calibrations (recipes) which can be automatically activated based on the product being processed. HMI-wise, the operator interface self-adjusts in size and displayed data based on the user's access level and habits.
